The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies is one of the oldest veterinary schools in the world, founded in 1823 by William Dick and is world-renowned for its efforts in research, led by The Roslin Institute, which is incorporated with the school. The Institute is famous for the cloning of Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell. This was a major scientific achievement as it demonstrated that the DNA from adult cells, can be used to create an entirely new organism.

The schools also works closely with The Queen's Veterinary School Hospital, whose aims are to provide a comprehensive clinical service across a range of species and disciplines for clients, undergraduate and postgraduate students and the veterinary profession in general.
