I recently took the SAT in South Africa and wanted to enquire if I have to take any other test besides the SAT.I attended Tshwane Christian School in Pretoria in which I had taken English as a Home Language until the completion of Matric. Is there any other English Proficiency test I need to take for applications to USA institutions?
The SAT is a significant step in the process - so well done! Regarding the requirement for an English proficiency test such as the TOEFL, it largely depends on the specific criteria set by the universities you’re targeting in the United States.
Even though you have studied English as a Home Language, some U.S. universities might still request proof of English proficiency from students who are not native English speakers. That’s where exams like the TOEFL or IELTS typically come into play.
However, it’s super important to note that many universities exhibit flexibility in this regard. If you’ve completed a substantial portion of your education in English, which appears to be your situation, they may waive this requirement.
Therefore, my recommendation would be to scrutinize the admissions page of each university you’re interested in. They will explicitly state their requirements, and you’ll be able to determine if an English proficiency test is needed. If their expectations are unclear or if you have any doubts, don’t hesitate to reach out to them directly. They’re generally rather responsive and helpful in clarifying these matters.
I hope this provides some clarity. Best of luck with your applications!
