Whether you’ve already received an offer to study in the UK or are just considering the option, applying for a student visa is an inevitable part of the study abroad experience. Tackling this on your own can feel quite daunting, which is why we’ve assembled this step-by-step guide! We’ll guide you through the process, covering visa fees, required documents, and all essential details to ensure a smooth experience.
Before we jump into the steps, it’s crucial that we first cover our bases, in terms of exactly what kind of student visa you’ll need, when to apply, and the exceptions to these conditions!
If you're above 17 and have an unconditional offer to study in the UK, whether that’s at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, you'll need to apply for a student visa. This visa, which recently replaced the Tier 4 (General) Student Visa, is available for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as part-time postgraduate studies. As an international student, you’ll need a student visa to legally become a student and begin your course in the UK.
Given that you’re applying from outside the UK, the earliest you’ll be able to apply is six months before the start of your course. The official estimate is that it takes three weeks for a visa to be processed and approved, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry! Once you have all the necessary documents in hand, and you’re within the mandated six month window, it’s best to apply as soon as possible.
Naturally, the most important thing to keep in mind when applying for a student visais making sure that you fit the eligibility criteria. Here are the main requirements you’ll need to apply for a student visa in the UK:
With the basics out of the way, here’s all the documentation you’ll need on hand to begin your application:
With everything on hand, it’s time to jump in! You’ll start the application process by registering on the online application portal. Make sure you keep your passport and your debit or credit card handy, as you’ll need them both as you go through the application.
Step 1: You’ll begin by declaring the origin of your passport and acknowledging that you’ll need to provide your biometric information at a local visa centre. In Singapore, these are run by the partner organisation VFS Global. At the end of this process, you'll be prompted to register and book an appointment.
Step 2: Register your email and password to create an account with the portal. This will allow you to save your application and come back to it later.
Step 3: Answer the questions on the application form, including your travel history over the past 10 years and the purpose of your travels. Have your passport ready to provide accurate details.
Step 4: Upload the required documents according to the checklist we’ve included above for you, such as your CAS document and a scanned copy of your passport.
Step 5: Make payment. Here, you’ll be paying your visa application fee, which comes to £490 (~ 823 SGD), and the Immigrant Health Surcharge (IHS), which varies based on your visa length., but will allow you crucial access to the NHS during the duration of your studies! You can make use of this calculator provided by the UKVI to determine exactly how much you’re expected to pay, and avoid any surprises down the road!
Step 6: You’re almost there! Once you’ve confirmed that all of the information is as accurate as possible to the best of your knowledge, you can send off your application.
Step 7: At the end of the process, you’ll be redirected to book an appointment at the local VFS Global branch. For this section of the process, you’ll have to visit VFS Global twice; once, to provide your biometric information and hand in your passport, and the next to collect your passport with your visa. For these appointments, make sure to check out the document checklist assembled by VFS Global to make sure you’ve got everything you need!
We hope that this information has demystified the process for you! Remember, the visa application takes at least three weeks to process, and the time may increase based on geopolitical and governmental factors. That’s why it’s always best to start as early as you can, and have all your ducks in a row so you don’t have to worry as your departure date approaches!
As you’ll have realised by now, time is of the essence when it comes to your visa application! To save yourself the trouble of cumbersome back-and-forths, or frantic document searches, here are three common mistakes you should avoid, to make the most of this process.Â
As you go through the application, make sure all of your information is as accurate as possible! This includes running through the details of seemingly pedestrian fields, like making sure there aren’t any typos in your name or address, as these are crucial for your application and further communications.Â
Given that this application process requires a fair amount of evidentiary paperwork, it’s extremely important to make sure that you’ve got the right ones on hand. This means making sure that the information is valid, up to date, and suitable for the application field, to avoid your application being wrongfully rejected!Â
If applicable, the financial requirements are a massively important step of the application process, as they do go into determining your suitability for the visa. It’s important to make sure that you upload a recent bank statement with the necessary, provisional amount depending on where your institution is located.Â
Lastly, make sure that you meet the deadline! You should be applying for your visa three to six months before the start of your course, to give yourself plenty of time to handle any unforeseen circumstances stress-free.Â
Once your visa is approved, you're almost ready to start your life as an international student in the UK. There are just a couple of things left to do before you begin.
Travel details: Make sure you have your flights booked, and give yourself plenty of time to rest and recharge before beginning this next chapter of your journey! As you travel, you’ll also have to get your visa stamped at one of the manual counters at the airport, which the ground staff will guide you through.Â
Finding accommodation: Though looking for student accommodation isn’t dependent on your visa status, it’s great to start having a look around early and save yourself the stress of having to hunt for a place to stay further down the line. Most UK universities allow their students to stay in university halls for their first year, so make sure you register early to snag a room. Most importantly, make sure to check your move-in dates against your arrival date, just so you won’t be left in the lurch!Â
Collect your BRP: As a show of their approval, the UK government will have issued you with a vignette in your passport, and a letter instructing you on how and when to collect your Biometric Residential Permit, more commonly known as the BRP. You’ll likely collect this at your institution during your matriculation week, and going forward, it will be the most important document for you to keep safe, as it guarantees your stay in the UK, and allows you to enter the country.Â
