A Close Look at Emory’s Admission History

In its early years, Emory was a small Methodist college that primarily served the local community. The admission process was relatively simple, and prospective students could apply for enrollment by submitting their academic records and a letter of recommendation from their pastor. The admissions decision was made by the faculty members of the college, and students were admitted on a rolling basis.

Emory's enrollment grew slowly during its early years, and it wasn't until the 20th century that the university began to expand its academic programs and increase its enrollment. By the 1950s, Emory had become a leading university in the Southeast, and it was attracting students from across the United States.

In the 1960s, Emory began to require standardized test scores as part of its admissions process. This change was a response to the increasing number of applications the university was receiving and the need to identify the most qualified candidates for admission. The SAT and ACT became a critical part of the admissions process, and Emory began to receive more applications from highly qualified students.

In the 1990s, Emory became even more selective, and its admissions process became more complex. The university began to look at a range of factors when making admissions decisions, including the applicant's academic record, test scores, extracurricular activities, and personal essays. This approach allowed the university to identify students who were not only academically qualified but who also had a range of interests and talents that would enrich the university community.
